Dear RegenerateX Community,
We're thrilled to share a summary of the incredible insights and experiences from the recent RegenerateX Intentions 2024 event. Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed their wisdom and energy.
The event last Sunday featured a diverse panel of 25 speakers, including Nora Bateson (Combining), Douglas Rushkoff (Team Human), Carol Sanford (The Regenerative Business), Brendan Graham Dempsey (Metamodern Spirituality), Ida Faldbakken (CEO KatapultX & co-founder Katapult Future Fest), Andres Roberts (Founding Partner Bio-Leadership), Ruth Andrade (LUSH), Mamadou Kwidjim Toure (Founder and CEO of Ubuntu Tribe), Diana Beata Krueger and Sylvester Catherine (Motherland), Adib Dada (theOtherDada), Cara M. de Lange (Softer Succes) and many more beautiful souls in our network.
The event garnered participation from many diverse individuals and cultivated a vibrant palette of heart-led intentions. Throughout the engaging +3-hour session, meaningful dialogues unfolded, contributing to a collective sense that the best of our humanity is poised to flourish. We embarked on a journey of seeding intentions, experiencing a profound joy in the celebration of our shared becoming.
Along with this summary below, you can view the complete recording of the event for you to experience the conversations and insights firsthand.
Canay Atalay & Rudy de Waele opened with guest speakers sharing their intentions for 2024, including Douglas Rushkoff (Team Human), Nora Bateson (Combining), Carol Sanford (The Regenerative Business), Brendan Graham Dempsey (Metamodern Spirituality), and many others. Here are some key themes and excerpts from the speakers' shared intentions, which encompassed personal growth, community building, systemic thinking, and a compassionate, holistic approach to life and work:
1. Shift from Intention to Attention: Nora Bateson emphasised being attentive and present, acknowledging the limits of our perception and the importance of being receptive and open to new perspectives. “I think…that I'm really interested in attention, in paying attention in listening in…in receiving and noticing that my habituated ways of receiving and perceiving the world around me are, are, limited."
2. Embracing 'Creatureliness': Nora Bateson also highlighted the significance of acknowledging our innate, natural aspects - our 'creatureliness' - and how it connects us more deeply with the world: “And so part of my learning, and I think these two things are connected is to pay attention to those things that make us creatures and how? How can I allow your creature to be? Right? So who can your creature be? When you're with me? Who can my creature be? When I'm with you?”
3. Dignity in Relationships: The idea of holding each other with dignity, moving beyond superficial interactions to form deeper, meaningful connections.
4. Compassion Over Intentionality: Douglas Rushkoff discussed prioritising compassion and bearing witness over imposing one's will or intentions on situations or others. “My intention is to ease off intentionality, and surrender to compassion, whether I am merely giving palliative care to a civilisation as it dies, or whether I'm actually doing what the mushrooms do. And engaging in the process of regeneration through my willingness to metabolise what's around me, rather than worry about what is me. I think, at least the vast majority of us can do infinitely more good by bearing witness to what's happening, rather than imposing our will on it.”
5. A New Way of Activism: Douglas also spoke about how his activism to convince others to change evolved in presence in service to help processes of others and witness collective trauma and changes. Adib Dada (theOtherDada) shared his way of activism about planting liberation and reaping just life for humans, and the more than human life and making space for all of us to come together in service of life, by asking the profound question: “What would nature do here?”
6.Reimagining Learning: Brendan Graham Dempsey spoke about the need for nuanced and sophisticated approaches for human learning and development, to navigate the complexities of our ever-evolving world, dedicated to advancing systems-based thinking in areas like food, social systems, and sense-making frameworks.
7. Regenerative Mindset: Carol Sanford emphasized the need to move beyond traditional paradigms to a regenerative mindset, focusing on understanding systems and fostering their self-regenerative capacities.
8.From Self-Actualization to System Actualization : Carol also highlighted the shift from self-focused goals to understanding and enhancing whole systems, promoting collective well-being.
9. Learning to Ask for Help: Several speakers, including participants in group discussions, mentioned learning to seek assistance as a strength, not a weakness, essential for personal growth and community building.
10. Health and Well-Being Focus: Health, both personal and within communities, was a recurring theme, seen as foundational for effective action and change.
11. Balance of Practicality and Vision: The speakers underscored the need to balance practical, grounded actions with visionary, holistic thinking to address complex challenges effectively.
No More Gold Stars: Regenerating Capacity to Think for Ourselves
Carol Sanford's workshop offered a profound shift in perspective, inviting participants to engage deeply with regenerative principles and apply them to their personal and professional lives for systemic change. Here are some key points she shared:
Moving Beyond Traditional Paradigms: Carol emphasized the necessity to transition from extractive and harm-reducing paradigms to regenerative paradigms, which focus on the vitality and capacity of systems to renew and sustain themselves.
Understanding Systems and Their Dynamics: She highlighted the importance of comprehending how living systems operate, urging attendees to move away from viewing nature as an abstraction and instead see it as dynamic and alive.
Developing a Regenerative Mindset: Carol discussed the shift from a behavioural paradigm, rooted in external authority and expertise, to a regenerative one that encourages self-thinking and understanding.
Personal Development for Systemic Change: The workshop underscored the importance of personal growth in contributing to systemic change. This involves a deeper understanding of one's role within larger systems and the impact of individual actions. She focused on moving from self-actualisation to system actualisation, where the goal is not individual achievement but the health of the entire system.
Interactive Reflection and Application: Carol facilitated a regenerative thinking process through a dialogue with Canay Atalay, and encouraged participants to apply these principles to their own projects and reflect on their learning.
Lastly, we were blessed with more intentions of our community and an the inspirational audio performance by beatboxer and voice magician Marv Radio.
