Building Regenerative Cities
Shifting towards healthy living models for urban citizens using green city design
π π π Today is Earth Day π π π
Earth Day is an annual event to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EARTHDAY.ORG including 1 billion people and + 75,000 partners in more than 193 countries. The official theme for 2023 is Invest In Our Planet.
As RegenerateX, we want to contribute to Earth Day with a focus and intention to create awareness around our own personal behaviours in how we treat earth, living in cities, and how we can change our behaviours to contribute to a healthier life for all.
On Earth Day, You can create awareness about climate literacy, grow trees, support Sustainable Fashion, help end Plastic Pollution, attend a cleanup, and Vote Earth or create your own activity or event calling for life centric transformation.

What is a regenerative city?
A regenerative city focuses on creating a self-sustaining system, regenerating natural resources, and transforming the urban environment to restore and replenish the resources it consumes. It encompasses a holistic view of sustainability, not just environmental, but also social and economic.
Itβs worthwhile reading Jenny Andersonβs reflections on the topic.
Regenerating our cities
When talking about regenerating our cities, itβs important to understand how we are all responsible for contributing to a continuous polluting cycle we need to break.
And what is the responsibility I take in driving change towards regenerative behaviour and way of being?
How can I contribute in changing my personal habits and influence the people around me in navigating such a transition?
The first step is to become aware of our own behaviour and check where we can make a difference. For example:
Are you aware of creating a healthy relationship with yourself and others (family, friends, neighbours, community)?
How are those relationships? Please take some time to do such important inquiries. Itβs the first step in becoming regenerative.
And think about your behaviours, and your habits in your day-to-day life and work and how your neighbourhood functions.Β
How is the quality of theβ¦:
air you breathe?
water you drink (or import in plastic bottles)?
food (imported in plastic or local and organic)?
sanitation system and sewage management?
energy input (heating and cooling consumption systems, green/renewable or fossil fuel-ed)?
trash management and recycling?
transport in the city (public or private, shared and sustainable mobility)?
green spaces in the city?
building you live in (materials, sustainable, degradable, resilient, β¦)?
your consumption habits and patterns?
distribution of goods you consume in the city (is the way your goods come into the city sustainable)?
economy (recycling and circular systems of packaging and used materials)?
Am I aware I am contributing to a more polluting lifestyle? If so, am I taking responsibility for stopping such polluting behaviour? Or am I contributing to a more healthier lifestyle, positive relationships and a greener planet?
βHow does nature sequester carbon here? How is housing supporting biodiversity, is water cooling the air, what would it mean if our place tried to mimic the way in which the nature around it works? How do we ensure that the clothes weβre wearing and the food weβre eating in the city isnβt doing βharmβ somewhere else? What are their wage and working conditions? Maybe they are just outside the reach of the city, but they may be on the other side of the world. How do we ensure the global procurement supply chains for cities respect the human and ecological conditions that the produce they suck into their city are respecting peopleβs human rights and the ecological boundaries of the planet?β - Kate Raworth (Doughnut Economics)
How can we make our cities more regenerative?
Regenerating our cities involves applying a holistic approach to sustainability, including environmental, social, and economic factors, and emphasising regenerative design, circular economies, and social equity.Β
The basis is to transition the existing resources towards wind and solar power, and the reduction of waste and pollution through integrating green spaces, public transportation, and the construction of new buildings with bio-degradable materials.
How can we shift towards more healthy living models for urban citizens using green city design is a question every city council should ask themselves. Something the city of Barcelona started years ago by radically redesigning the inner city and its traffic/transport based outdated model on late 19th century needs of bringing more people and cars into the city. Read here how Barcelona is boosting the cityβs mental health by creating more green spaces for citizens to play and socialise.
The importance of regenerative technologies
The process will take years, probably decades to build real regenerative resilient cities, however with the advent of regenerative ethical technologies, and 3D printing of bio-materials and looking at the redistribution of our supply chains towards more local, organic food distribution, the concept of a regenerative city offers a promising framework for the future and actually is starting to happen already.
As we look to build more sustainable and resilient cities, the concept of a regenerative city offers a promising framework for the future.
